About Tara Baukus Mello

Tara Baukus Mello began her career in communications in 1987. She has worked as a magazine editor, a corporate communications professional and a freelance journalist. A passion for automobiles brought her to Petersen Publishing (now part of Primedia), where she was the editor of the special interest publications in the automotive performance group, producing a new magazine every three weeks. 

 

 

With over 3,500 articles to her credit, Tara's writing career has ranged from music and theater reviews to investigative journalism and travel articles. She is also the author of ten non-fiction chapter books for children.

 

Tara has 14 years experience specializing in the automotive industry. Her work has appeared in such publications as Autoweek, Woman's World, Parade, Automotive News, The New York Times, cNet.com, Edmunds.com, Truck Trend, Camping Life, Auto World, Westways and Autobytel.com, among others. She is the former news anchor for Motor Trend Radio, writing and recording the show's twice-weekly broadcasts. Tara puts her corporate communications background to work with training materials, executive ghostwriting/speechwriting, corporate writing and more. 

 

Originally from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Tara graduated cum laude from Harvard University with a Bachelors of Liberal Arts and a concentration in writing. She currently parks her ’32 Ford in the garage of her family's Southern California home.  

 

 

Awards

 

Built a 1932 Ford Pickup street rod (with her father) that received a national award by the National Street Rod Association in 1992.

In 2002, Tara's car care clinic, “Let's Talk Car Care,” received an award from The Car Care Council, a national non-profit organization that is part of the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association.

In 2003, she received an International Automotive Media Award for her article, "Diesel Developments," which was published on Edmunds.com.
